Web Site Marketing

Your Internet Real Estate Helps Build Your Business

Web site marketing is an excellent way to create a solid presence on the Internet. Having your own website lends credibility to your online business.

This is your opportunity to let those Web searchers know:

Who you are

What you have to offer

In your own unique voice.

Lets take a closer look. Before we do, let me point out that this term is correct in its two variations: web site and website. I will use the two interchangeably.

Okay! So first things first. There is a very important question to ask yourself in relation to your web site marketing. It's a question that people landing at your website will also ask:

Who Are You?

Considering that the Internet is a fairly impersonal medium, how you present yourself through your web site is very important. When considering your web site marketing, you would do well to remember the following phrase, one repeated throughout this site:

People want to do business with someone they know and trust.

So how do you let them get to know you? One of the ways is through the single most important page of your site:

The About YOU page.

When I arrive at a website, after a quick perusal, if I decide this site is worthy of a deeper look, the next page I go to is the one with a bio of the website owner or owners.

Why is this?

I want to know a little something about the person or people behind the web site and the business.

Here is commonly what your visitors want to know:

Who are you?

Where are you?

What is your experience?

How did you come to do what you do?

Why would I choose to do business with you?

Give your visitors a reason to want to work with you.

The About... or Bio Page may be the most read page on your web site.

This is your opportunity to use web site marketing to open the door into your corner of the world.

The "About..." page is not a resume of all of your accomplishments, although you can certainly include them. Rather, it is an little story of who you are, and how it is that you came to be doing what you are now doing.

Through your story, you create many possibilities for entry into your world.

Remember, you don’t really know which part of your story will engage someone’s attention, and open the door just that much more.

Think of it as your introduction.

Often the bio or "About..." page is written in the third person, as though someone else is speaking about you. Most Internet marketers actually work with a team of people, even though this particular site may be their own.

Whether it's written in the first or third person:

Your "About..." page is one way to personalize your website.

And there is another way.

In Your Own Voice

We all have a distinct way of communicating our ideas to the world.
It’s important that your web site marketing reflect that.

It's a Conversation

Whether you are writing in first person or third, think of the content of your entire site as conversational in tone.

Just one person talking to another.

When you think about it, that’s really what’s happening.

Let your humor show.

One person is sitting in front of their computer, reading information posted on your website.

At that particular moment, you are speaking directly to them.

Let your humanness show.

Not to the masses of visitors you hope are coming to your site, but just to this one visitor, this one Web searcher who has landed at your site.

Allow the light that is you to shine through your words.

How important is correct grammar on a website? Not very.

We do not talk in grammatically correct sentences. Or even complete ones. If you write the way you speak, the tone will remain conversational.

Always remember your target audience.

If your business is in the scientific field, for example, your choice of words might be a bit different.

Know who you are most likely to be talking to, and address them accordingly. That's good web site marketing.

The Dynamic Duo: Good Content & Generosity

When I am searching for something on the Internet, first I type what I’m looking for into a search engine, and then I click on the link to one of the web sites from the list provided.

And by now you know that once I arrive at my web site of choice, I quickly go to the About Me page. There is a simple maxim to always remember:

YOU are your business.

That said, you absolutely must provide good, quality information about your product or service.

Good content is key.

Within a website, you will have many pages with which to do just that.
You can provide quality content, and include links to recommended, related resources. It’s all good.

And yet. . . something has to help the visitor to your website decide to do business with you. What will that be?

It may be that initial presentation on your home page. Or perhaps something they read about you on your About Me page. It might be the excellent ebook that you offer.

A good rule of thumb for your website is to provide quality information in your niche, and:

Give as much as you reasonably can.

Can you offer a free consultation?

Podcast that can be downloaded?

Free ebook?

Remember...

The Internet is The Information SuperHighway.

And good web site marketing reflects that. When you provide useful, quality information to the visitors to your website, and are generous with what you offer, they are very likely to return.

And people returning to your website is what you want.

But I Don’t Know How to Build a Web Site!

You're not alone!

Today, even with few computer skills and minimal experience on the web, you can build your own website. The key is to use the right program, one that supports your level of skill, whatever that may be!

Not all website building programs are the same, and it can take time to sort through them. A good program must provide:

training for all skill levels

accessible tools

ongoing support

And I can recommend one that does.

Site Build It
is a premiere website building program, that can meet the needs of the complete novice or the skilled webmaster. They have helped thousands of new internet entrepreneurs build successful websites. Including me.

Once your website is built, the next step for your web site marketing is to increase website traffic.
