What is the Baby Boom Generation?
Mid-Twentieth Century, and post-World War Two, a lot of babies were born. In North America and Europe, this new generation was associated with prosperity. It was a time of affluence and a time of hope. It has been said that this was the healthiest, wealthiest generation that had occurred to date. Representing the promise that came with the end of the war and the defeat of fascism, this generation became known as the baby boom.
All those babies soon became kids. Schools were expanded to accommodate the suddenly rising enrollment. The relatively new phenomenon of television rose to the occasion with programs such as The Howdy Doody Show and The Mickey Mouse Club. As the medium gradually moved from black and white to color, along came that colorful peacock and Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, Bonanza, Get Smart and Star Trek. The baby boom became the first generation to grow up watching TV.
Not Every Baby Boomer is the Same
While much has been said to try to find a cultural definition for this generation, the truth is, there isn’t one.
Baby boomers are a demographic defined by the time of our birth. The most commonly agreed upon dates are 1946-1964. The largest wave of births having happened between 1952 and 1957. Baby boomers represent roughly 29% of the population in the U.S. And there are other names for this generation, as well. I’m told that in Canada we are sometimes referred to as “Boomies,” while in Britain we are known as “the bulge.” I still remember that sweet aroma of freshly printed mimeograph paper. And I saw The Beatles live in concert. But that's not everybody's story. In the media, the 1960’s are often cited as the decade that defined the generation. The social events and changes, music and “counter culture” that emerged had an effect on us all. How that manifested was different for each boomer, dependant in part on when you were born. Someone who was in high school in the early sixties had a very different experience than someone who graduated in 1976. For many of us the assassination of President Kennedy was a defining moment. We know where we were when we heard the news. Yet others were too young to remember. The oldest of us may have marched in the Civil Rights Movement the same year the youngest among us were born. While some of us did a tour of duty in Viet Nam, still others demonstrated against the war. And some did both. Lives were lost, lives were changed.
Although sometimes identified as those “aging hippies,” our cultural range is much broader than that. We embraced the counter culture, or stuck to the mainstream. In this regard, we have been all over the map. One thing, however, is common to us all. We have adapted to a tremendous amount of change in our lifetime. And it’s not over yet! As of 2009, baby boomers range in age from 45 to 63. Midlife to early retirement. And as the economic winds are shifting, this generation of promise faces some brand new challenges.
The Times, They Are A'Changin' (Reprise)
This past year has been one of incredible economic turmoil worldwide. For some of us, this may have meant that we were downsized out of a job. For many of us, this economic downslide has sapped our retirement funds. If we were lucky enough to have had a nest egg, it dwindled, or even disappeared. We had been looking for a way to retire early. Now we're looking for a way to retire at all. So what now? How does this much-storied generation rise to the occasion once again? It’s simple. We find a new way.
The Future is Now
Many years ago I trained in the martial arts. A Chi Gung master who was one of my teachers used to say the following phrase: Fear is excitement without breath. I have remembered and used that phrase many times to breathe myself from fear, apprehension or worry right into excitement. With these shifting sands, it quickly became clear to me that an excellent way to map out my future is as an Internet entrepreneur. As I began to study Web 2.0 and all the latest happenings in
social marketing,
I got very excited! There is a learning curve to this Internet dance, and hooking up with a good mentor is a wise choice. Being an Internet entrepreneur has been compared to being a lifelong student. You must keep up with the latest, and there will always be something more to learn. It's perfect for baby boomers. Have a look around this website as you ponder it all. Do some exploring. I have one more thing to say to my beloved generation. We have lived through more technological changes than several past generations combined. We have made our way from party lines to mobile phones, typewriters to laptops, 8-track to iPod and beyond. The world has transformed itself into a wireless communication phenomenon, and we're still here! We can conquer the Internet. Welcome to the Future. Again. Here's a good place to get started:
