Baby Boomers

Welcome!

This website provides information and support for baby boomers who are - or want to become - internet entrepreneurs.

This page is for all of us who have survived the many changes in our lives, to arrive right here, at this moment in time.

What is the Baby Boom Generation?

Mid-Twentieth Century, and post-World War Two, a lot of babies were born.

In North America and Europe, this new generation was associated with prosperity.

A time of affluence and a time of hope.

Representing the promise that came with the end of the war and the defeat of fascism, this generation became known as the baby boom.

The healthiest, wealthiest generation to date.

All those babies soon became kids. Schools were expanded to accommodate the suddenly rising enrollment.

The TV Generation

The relatively new phenomenon of television catered to this young audience with programs such as The Mickey Mouse Club and The Howdy Doody Show.

As we began to grow up, the medium gradually moved from black and white to color, and along came that famous peacock.

Now we watched Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, Bonanza, Get Smart and the premier of as new futuristic space show called Star Trek.

The baby boom is the first generation to grow up watching TV.

Not Every Baby Boomer is the Same

While much has been said to try to find a cultural definition for this generation, the truth is, there isn’t one.

Baby boomers are a demographic defined by the time of our birth.

The most commonly agreed upon dates are 1946-1964

The largest wave of births happened between 1952 and 1957

Baby boomers represent roughly 29% of the population in the U.S.

Other names: Boomies (Canada), The Bulge (Britain)

I still remember that sweet aroma of freshly printed mimeograph paper. And I saw The Beatles live in concert. But that's not everybody's story.

In the media, the 1960’s are often cited as the decade that defined the generation. The social events and changes, music and “counter culture” that emerged had an effect on us all.

How that manifested was different for each boomer, dependant in part on when you were born. Someone who was in high school in the early sixties had a very different experience than someone who graduated in 1976.

For many of us, a defining moment was the assassination of President Kennedy. We know where we were when we heard the news. Yet others were too young to remember.

The oldest of us may have marched in the Civil Rights Movement the same year the youngest among us were born.

While some of us did a tour of duty in Viet Nam, still others demonstrated against the war. And some did both. Lives were lost, lives were changed.

Not Just Hippies

Although sometimes identified as those “aging hippies,” our cultural range is much broader than that.

We embraced the counter culture, or stuck to the mainstream.

We leaned to the left or to the right or landed somewhere in the middle.

Culturally and politically, we have been all over the map.

One thing, however, is common to us all.

We have adapted to a tremendous amount of change in our lifetime.

And it’s not over yet! As of 2010, baby boomers range in age from 46
to 64. Midlife to early retirement. The economic winds have shifted, and this generation of promise faces some brand new challenges.

The Times, They Are A'Changin' (Reprise)

Recent times have brought incredible economic turmoil worldwide. For some of us, this may have meant that we were downsized out of a job.

For many of us, this economic downslide has sapped our retirement funds.

If we had a nest egg, it dwindled, or even disappeared.

We had been looking for a way to retire early.
Now we're looking for a way to retire at all.

What now?

How does this much-storied generation rise to the occasion once again?

It’s simple. We find a new way.

The Future is Now

Many years ago I trained in the martial arts. A Chi Gung master who was one of my teachers used to say the following phrase:

Fear is excitement without breath.

I have remembered and used that phrase many times to breathe myself from fear, apprehension or worry right into excitement.

With these shifting sands, it quickly became clear to me that a good way to map out my future is as an Internet entrepreneur.

As I began to study Web 2.0 and all the latest in social marketing, I got very excited!

There is a learning curve to this Internet dance, and finding good training and a good mentor is a wise choice.

Being an Internet entrepreneur has been compared to being a lifelong student.

You must keep up with the latest, and things do change in the online world! There will always be something more to learn.

It's perfect for baby boomers.

Postscript

I have one more thing to say to my beloved generation.

We have lived through more technological changes than several past generations combined. We have made our way from party lines to mobile phones, typewriters to laptops, 8-track to iPod and beyond.

The world has transformed itself into a wireless communication phenomenon, and we're still here!

We can conquer the Internet.

Welcome to the Future. Again.
